“Domus Lascaris” is a 1950s building whose renovation, by Boffa, Petrone & Partners, a Gruppo Building design studio and led by Luca Petrone, focused on the exterior and interior spaces, redefining architectural modernism in a contemporary key.
According to Piero Boffa, Founder and Chairman of the Gruppo Building, “Domus Lascaris is the new milestone in the innovation of living downtown Turin”. The aim of the project was to contribute to the process of transforming the city centre into a more sustainable place for a dynamic, increasingly aware contemporary society. At the same time, in continuity with the Gruppo’s corporate philosophy, the common areas have also been designed to become opportunities for socialising and meeting, through art, culture and wellness.
The renovation has therefore paid great attention to environmental impact: the eleven flats (ranging in size from 127 to 247 square metres and two penthouses of 423 and 531 square metres) have been designed with minimal energy consumption and certified with a high energy class. The skeleton of the building reveals the original rationalist matrix, inserting sunshade windows and mirrors that form a telescope of light inside the flats to make the most of natural light; its modernisation focused mainly on the redefinition of the exterior surface.
The application of the over-cladding to the entire exterior has made it possible to contain heat loss within legal limits and to reduce the building’s heating/cooling costs. The restyling of the façades has applied a concept with a strong visual impact due to its elegant minimalism. A new three-dimensionality was obtained on the façade by intervening on the existing openings with the use of extremely discreet glass, for all the elements protecting the openings and terraces.
A great deal of care was taken in the choice of materials for this unique exterior renovation. The façade cladding is made of Laminam 1000×1000 mm slabs from the Calce Bianco collection, with Laminam 3+ thickness, a collection that makes simplicity and softness its aesthetic and tactile hallmark, inspired by the functionality of a freshly plastered wall, in full rationalist style.
Thanks to the inherent properties of the ceramic slab, Laminam exterior façade claddings allow for greater surface durability, weather resistance and design flexibility. Applied as an external cladding, Calce Bianco allows for visual and aesthetic continuity without burdening the load-bearing structure of the building, given its lightness thanks to its reduced thickness. A perfect mix of aesthetics and technology, with low porosity and unalterable performance (even when exposed to heat, frost, sudden thermal changes and UV rays), characteristics typical of Laminam slabs, which are essential when it comes to exterior cladding.
In line with a new way of living, closely linked to the history of the city and the redevelopment of the urban context, the “Domus Lascaris” modernisation project is therefore based on a continuous dialogue between public and private spaces. Shifting the gaze from the exterior façade to the interior spaces, the large windows on the first floor linger on the modern lobby – also clad with Laminam surfaces – from which you access an art gallery open to the public.
For the wall claddings in the lobby of the new luxury real estate in Turin and the floorings in the bathrooms, the choice went to a refined combination of Laminam slabs inspired by the white marble of the I Naturali collection.
The Bianco Statuario Venato Polished surface in the 1000×3000 mm size is the queen of luxurious rooms with a modern or classical taste; the structure is composed of a crystalline white and grey veins, a material that is very popular internationally. Calacatta Oro Venato Polished, applied in the 1000×3000 mm size, is characterised by a background tending towards ivory, crossed by prominent veins turning to gold, brown and grey. In the combination of the large size slabs, the pattern is always different, thanks to the variety of veins that decorate the texture with varying intensity and length.
Both collections have been chosen with Laminam 5 thickness, which is particularly performing in flooring and stair treads thanks to its excellent impact resistance in highly trampled areas such as the lobby, maintaining a common denominator with all Laminam large surface collections: elegance and beauty. This is accompanied by a qualitative perfection, the result of research into raw materials and cutting-edge technologies, which makes the surfaces versatile, perfect for application in various environments, for a redefinition of spaces in the name of beauty, redevelopment, modernity and sustainable processes.
“Creativity, technological innovation, architecture as art and attention to detail, together with the search for architectural solutions and quality materials: these are the values that inspire my idea of architecture. The purpose is the diffusion of a new idea of living, which passes through the creation of spaces – such as our “Domus Lascaris”, for which we chose Laminam materials not by chance – they are new, sustainable, on a human scale and future-oriented.” – Piero Boffa
The journey of discovery of “Domus Lascaris” culminates in the spaces designed by the firm for the Turin owners, specifically dedicated to personal care, with condominium spaces reserved for wellness with a swimming pool, spa, gym and a roof-top terrace to enjoy Turin en plen-air.
